STEAM Squad
Into Inclusion invites young people of all abilities ages 8-15 to join our 6-week STEAM class!
STEAM Squad is a six-week hands-on science and making class. Each week pairs a scientific idea with a technique for building, printing, or constructing something. Projects include sun prints, crystal sculpture, marbling, clay, and more. Taught by co-owner Kathleen Penland, who holds a Master's of Science in Education from Hunter College (CUNY).
Week 1 – Sun Prints: UV light and photochemical change (cyanotype)
Week 2 – Chromatography: solubility and capillary action (color separation)
Week 3 – Marbling: surface tension and density (pulling a marbled print)
Week 4 – Crystal Sculpture, Part 1: saturated solutions (building a wire form to grow crystals)
Week 5 – Clay & Crystals: drying and material change (hand-building; crystals revealed)
Week 6 – Engineering Build: tension, compression, and balance (freestanding sculpture and student exhibition)
What students learn: following a lab procedure; measuring and mixing solutions; forming and testing a hypothesis; studio and lab safety; recording observations in a science notebook; explaining their work using scientific vocabulary.
Progress: A written summary and certificate of completion are available on request. Non-credit.
