Cooking & Connection

Class Overview:

Cooking & Connection is a weekly class open to ALL ABILITIES, and designed specifically for adults with Autism, Down Syndrome, and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (IDD). While building essential cooking skills, participants engage in meaningful social learning opportunities including conversation practice, relationship building, emotional regulation, and table etiquette—all within the natural, motivating context of preparing and sharing meals together.

Class Highlights:

  • Weekly 1.5-hour classes in small groups

  • Hands-on cooking instruction with age-appropriate recipes

  • Neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-based approach

  • Led by a Licensed and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA, LBA)

  • Supportive, inclusive learning environment

What Participants will Learn:

Cooking & Life Skills

  • Kitchen safety and hygiene

  • Measuring and following recipes

  • Using kitchen tools and appliances

  • Meal planning and preparation

  • Food handling and storage

  • Cleaning and organizing

  • Independence in the kitchen

Social & Emotional Skills

  • Conversation Skills: Starting, maintaining, and ending conversations naturally during cooking activities

  • Collaboration: Working together, sharing responsibilities, and supporting peers

  • Emotional Regulation: Managing frustration, celebrating successes, and coping with challenges

  • Problem-Solving: Adapting when things don't go as planned, asking for help when needed

  • Table Manners: Appropriate eating etiquette practiced during shared meals

  • Relationship Building: Developing connections with peers in a supportive environment

Who Should Join?

This program is designed for adults (18+) with Autism, Down Syndrome, and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities who:

  • Want to learn or improve cooking skills

  • Are interested in building community connections

  • Can safely participate in a group cooking environment (with or without support— caregivers or support staff are welcome)

  • Are motivated by food and cooking activities

  • Benefit from structured, predictable learning environments

When: Wednesdays in June: 12-1:30 pm (90 minutes)

How much: Sessions are $65 per participant, per week. Ingredients are included!
